African Personality of the Month September 2026
Chinua Achebe
Literature · Nigeria
The novelist who taught the world to read African history from the inside, beginning with Things Fall Apart.
The Citation
Chinua Achebe (1930–2013) published Things Fall Apart in 1958. Its account of Igbo society before and during colonial rule has been translated into dozens of languages and remains among the most widely read African novels.
As founding editor of Heinemann's African Writers Series, he helped bring a generation of African writers into print, and his 1975 lecture on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness changed how the colonial canon is taught.
He received the Man Booker International Prize in 2007. The African Mail honours him posthumously for giving Africa's story back to its own tellers.
